The problem

Islands suffer from high unemployment throughout the year, with a seasonal peak on non-tourist periods, especially amongst young people; this is what this project aims to tackle. Young professionals in islands face one of three challenges:

– there are very limited job opportunities, especially ones matching their qualifications

– the few that do exist require years of experience, forcing young people in a vicious cycle of a lack of job-lack of experience situation

– young people with ideas to create their own business and create jobs in the area, don’t have the necessary business skills or capital to start.

The main need that arises is that of the creation of new sustainable green jobs in the participating islands.

The objective

YENESIS main objective is to reduce unemployment of young NEET between 25-29 by creating green jobs in islands in the four areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport and mobility. The partners aim to support the discouraged young people who have stopped looking for work and are therefore socially excluded. Furthermore, embracing the Smart Islands Initiative and its principles of bottom-up approaches for innovation in islands, the project puts transnationality at its core as it recognises the commonalities amongst islands around Europe and understands the potential of exchanging good practices, as well as joint endeavours

project method

In order to maximise its impact, the project’s methods are divided into four distinct stages:

1.Research Stage.

Firstly, the expert needs to achieve a sustainable future will be identified and summarised in a guide on sustainability competencies for green jobs. These should be in line with each country’s Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialisation. Then, an identification process of good practises from partners, and especially the expertise partner, will be carried out to enable an exchange culture. The final part of this stage is the identification of the main target group through a survey carried out by each partner.

2.Learning Stage.

In this phase, YENESIS partners will identify 12 NEETs per country for a total of 84 participants that will participate to the project’s innovative training and educational programme. The participants will be equipped with the necessary tools to achieve the desired outcome. The tools include: (a) an educational course on business innovation and the 4 thematic areas, (b) a showcasing expedition on good practices in Norway, and (c) an apprenticeship mobility scheme between the beneficiary countries.

3.Application Stage.

The final stage of the project will solidify the outcomes of the project with the return of the participants to their home countries to work on local sustainability projects and an impact on their territories. Throughout this stage they will be mentored by experts in the different fields and the participants will have the opportunity to share and exchange their ideas throughout the network through an online platform created for this purpose.

4.Capitalisation Stage.

Running in parallel with the Application Stage, Capitalisation focuses on stakeholders to encourage them to engage in similar projects and improve employment situation for youth. Policy recommendations and active lobbying of the relevant stakeholders (HR development organisations, funding and educational institutes, business associations, and relevant governmental bodies) will take place during this stage. The capitalisation efforts will culminate in an international event with partners and stakeholders from all participating countries come together to synergise and collaborate. Apart from the direct transfer of good practice element, YENESIS also draws in methods and techniques such as creation of e-Learning courses, and design of VET programmes with apprenticeships. Mainly its innovative pedagogy methods, the skills application in real-life projects, and the visioning applied to create truly and holistically sustainable future jobs both for the people and the environment, render the project one of its kind. The process starting from the training of the participants of the main target group until the end of their local placements is uniquely designed in order to supply the young NEET professional with the skills, experience, and mentoring needed to move into employment with a focus on entrepreneurship.

1. A guide on sustainability competences for green jobs to be disseminated in secondary schools

2. Training course in 4 environmental topics and business innovation (in-class training, e-course and based on the training material)

3. Transfer of know-how from the expertise partner to participants from beneficiary countries and work experience for participants of the main target group

4. Job matching, good practice, and idea sharing online platform

5. Standardised and accredited educational programme based on the training material

6. Young NEET professionals participating in local sustainability projects

7. Business and technical mentoring of participants to encourage entrepreneurship

8. Engagement of stakeholders for the adoption of good practices

9. Policy recommendations for national governments and EU Institutions on improving employment situation of target group
